Tennis Couture for Serena Williams
This is what I think Serena should've worn to her 2011 US Open matches. I think this outfit suits her bubbly personality and girly side more than the Nike dress she wore. What do you think?

Resist 2 Tone: Workout & Wardrobe
Add Resistance To Your Workout & Wardrobe

RESIST 2 TONE:

Resistance training that uses elastic tension for muscle contraction will tone your body inside and out. Internally, it strengthens your heart and improves blood flow to your brain. Research studies at the Brain Research Center at the University of British Columbia have linked resistance training to the creation of new brain cells, which means adding resistance to your workout can make you smarter! On the outside, resistance training will make your body lean and muscular without the bulk. Now that you know what it does, let's talk about how you can get started.

WHAT YOU NEED: STRETCHY TOOLS

My favorite kind of resistance training is performed with elastic bands or rubber tubing which vary in style and tension strength. I like them because they're a nice break from dumbbells which can easily bulk you up. Bands and tubing create an elastic force that your muscles work against to push, pull, squeeze, stretch or bend. It's an entirely different sensation than working with dumbbells and can be just as hard or harder depending on the exercise. Don't underestimate these stretchy tools just because they don't have hard edges!

Here are some more advantages to working with bands and tubing:
* They're relatively inexpensive.
* You can do lots of exercises with them and even wrap them around columns or rails for added tension. Some also come with door attachments.
* They're lightweight and portable.
* You can combine them with weights to make strength training exercises harder.
* They don't take up much storage space and they don't cause harm (like broken toes) if you lose your grip.

One of my favorites is the SPRI Ultra Toner (with soft handles) which can be used for single arm and double arm exercises for upper body conditioning. The SPRI Ultra Toner Exercise Guide will help get you started. Once you master the basics, get creative and make up your own.

HOW TO GET STARTED: TRY THESE RESISTANCE DVD'S:

Marisa Tomei: Core & Curves ($14.98)

I adore Marisa Tomei and I've got mad love for trainer Key Son. Key designed the Core & Curves workout which incorporates resistance training exercise. He might kill me for singing his praises here (he's a very modest guy) but I have to rave because Core & Curves is well-done for a 20-minute results-oriented workout. Sometimes that's all you need but you still have to work hard from one minute to the next! Key works almost exclusively with models and actresses, prepping them for runway shows, commercial campaigns and film. He keeps his clients nicely toned and lean...just ask Hilary Swank. Core & Curves will help you achieve Key's signature lean physique. You'll use the Gaiam Toning Band pictured below for speed and agility exercises. It comes with the dvd...just follow Marisa's lead!

Jane Fonda Workout with Minibands feat. Tone It Up ($14.99)

The Jane Fonda Workout with Minibands may sound like it's from the 80's but it's actually a new release. The dvd features the Tone It Up girls a.k.a Team Fonda guiding you through a resistance training workout using minibands for lower body for strength. Prepare for leaner hips, legs and glutes! This dvd package includes 3 minibands (light, med, heavy) and a laminated flip book with additional instruction from the Tone It Up girls. With Jane Fonda's stamp on the dvd, what more do you need?

WHAT TO WEAR: BODY TONING FITNESS APPAREL:

Style up 2 Shape Up for resistance training with fitness clothes with built-in resistance. FILA's Body Toning System collection is designed to give your body a workout while you're working out. It sounds complicated but it's really quite simple. The Body Toning System is performance-enhancing activewear built with 4-way stretch and compression. BTS fabric is thick with a little give, and when worn tight can activate your muscles to work harder. The fabric compression also increases blood circulation which can boost your workout endurance. How amazing is that?
I'm a big fan because in addition to helping you tone, FILA's Body Toning System is slimming and cellulite-concealing. Sophie Monk, Star Jones, Cheryl Burke and Lo Bosworth are also BTS fans. The collection includes a tank, short, pant, capris and a long tight which can be worn for any kind of workout. Even if you're not resistance training, you will be once you're wearing BTS apparel. I wore my Toning Resistance tank and pant to yoga class one day and boy was that a killer practice! I was actually sore the next day. For best toning results with the BTS collection, go with a tight fit. Don't be scared to go down a size (remember, there's a slimming effect). If you live in NYC, shop the BTS collection in-store at Paragon Sports.

If you're the type of girl who likes to go the extra mile...try ShāToBu for a resistance workout when you're not technically working out. ShāToBu shaping tights are designed to make your muscles work harder and burn calories during everyday activities. Between FILA's BTS collection and ShāToBu tights, you can literally RESIST 2 TONE all day long!

Eco Fitness Couture
GREEN TIMES UPON US

America's favorite frog once said, "It ain't easy being green." If only poor Kermit could see how times have changed. When it comes to eco-friendly fitness apparel and accessories, there are so many options and different styles to choose from. Going green for fitness couldn’t be easier.

When Well To Do, a planet-friendly lifestyle blog, asked me to share my top eco-fitness-couture picks with their readers, I was thrilled and began my hunt for the greenest of green fitness trends. Check out my favorites below and consider jumping on the green bandwagon. I mean, why the heck not? It's not like you have to compromise on style. Plus, these apparel and accessory items don't cost that much more (and in some cases even less) than non-green items. It's good to be conscientious. We do it with the food we put in our bodies. Why not do it with the clothes we put on our backs? At the very least, do it for Kermy. Do that scrawny frog proud.

GREENIFY YOUR GYM GETUP

1. Begin the greenification process by choosing a Kalyx Sports Bra. My favorite style is made for yoga but that doesn't matter; I'd rock this sports bra for any kind of fitness activity. It has a racer-back which is great for support and free motion. I'm loving this bra for its sexy low cut and built-in cups. A little "shaping" and "enhancing" can't do a girl wrong. And you'll be happy to know that it's made from at least 35% recycled fibers.
2. Now that you've got good cleavage, time to add an edgy fitness top. I adore this Adidas Sleek Logo Tank for it's curve-hugging feminine fit and asymmetrical zipper detail which you can self-style open or closed. It's made with organic cotton and a glossy Trefoil print.
3. Put on some pants! I guarantee you won't find a softer pair than Green Apple Active's Fitted Yoga Flare Pant. I discovered this brand at a fitness convention and I have to admit that I bought two pairs of them: 1 for workout and 1 for pajama-loungin'. Made with a lightweight bamboo support jersey, they're seriously silky and super flattering against your skin.
4. Get rollin' but don't forget to cover up with this NYC cult favorite, the Roli Hoodie, from C.Marchuska. It's made of a sustainable blend of 92% bamboo viscose and 8% spandex.
5. Never last and never least, your feet deserve some green love too. The Evo Running Shoe by Terra Plana is the way to go. It's a stylish minimalist shoe with an ultra thin puncture resistant sole that offers maximum sensory feedback and maximum protection. Why do you need that? Because most likely you have bad running form or underdeveloped foot muscles from wearing over-cushioned and restricting sport shoes your entire life. The Evo is 100% vegan and made from recycled materials.
6. Your gear should be as fashionable as your outfit. 2 staples that I recommend for shaping up are the Zobha Manduka EkoLite Yoga Mat and the Mini-Core Ball by Natural Fitness. They're amazing because they're both travel-friendly and made for core strengthening/balancing exercises. The Zobha Manduka Mat is made of natural tree rubber while the Mini-Core Ball is made from non-toxic, phthalate free material.
7. Pack it up in the Everything Fits Bag by Gaiam, made from 100% recycled polyester. This gym bag is a gem because is has a vented outside compartment to hold stinky shoes and sweaty items that you might not want to mix with your valuables. Plus, there's plenty of room inside for a Yogitoes Sweatless Towel, an outer pocket for an eco-chic filtered water Bobble, and even bottom adjustable straps to hold your yoga mat (like the one mentioned above). Now, isn't that convenient? Why yes it is. See...being green is a cinch!

Boot Camp Couture

Boot Camp Couture
Boot camp workouts are back and gaining momentum with fitness-oriented women across the country. We're talking torture here...the kind that robs you of an extra hour of sleep, gets you yelled at, pierces your ears with short, sharp whistle-blowing and makes you cry every time you hear the word "push-up". So what's the draw and why are women getting so into it? Find out below...

6 REASONS TO SELF-TORTURE WITH BOOT CAMP

1. You'll get your workout out of the way and feel energized all day long. When you exercise first thing in the morning you don't have to exercise after work or at night! You can even go out and enjoy yourself, guilt-free! Imagine that! Plus your body will feel firm and toned. That's a nice confidence booster!

2. You'll get a huge calorie burn that continues post-workout. I can't give you an exact number since I'm not trained to do that but many fitness magazines estimate up to 600 calories per boot camp session. Since boot camp is a vigorous workout you'll experience a greater post-workout metabolism increase compared to other workouts. This is called exercise afterburn. It means you'll burn an additional 15 percent of the total calories expended during your boot camp workout. Woo hoo!

3. You'll discover a whole new level of motivation (that's always been inside of you). Boot camps are intense and your coach will most likely push you to new limits, meaning you'll workout a lot harder than normal, motivate to do exercises you would never do on your own, and see better results. Let's be real, when else are you forcing yourself to do athletic drills that incorporate field sprinting, crab crawls, burpees, lunge jumps, plank holds, plyometric jumping and 2 minutes of straight sit-ups or push-ups? Probably never. But there's a chance you'll start doing it more often once you know that you can.

4. Group exercise is rewarding (yes, even with strangers). Why? Because you'll never groan alone and the moral support from fellow bootcampers will get you through the toughest challenges. You'll cheer other bootcampers on as they reach their athletic goals which will inspire you to work harder to reach yours. The dynamic creates a positive and fulfilling experience. How can you have a bad day after that?

5. You'll become more alert and disciplined - whistles are dangerously good that way! Morning boot camps increase your energy and give you a headstart on your day which in turn makes you more productive. You'll apply listening, teamwork and goal-oriented skills to interactions and projects in your daily life or work. You'll develop a can-do approach to many situations in life and maybe even decide that giving up is never option.

6. You'll hang on to lean muscle mass. This is a big deal because lean muscle tends to dwindle once you hit 30 years of life, especially in women. Boot camps are known for intense multi-joint exercises mixed with cardiovascular training--a winning combo to help you maintain and increase lean muscle throughout your body. You'll experience creative drills that alternate between strength training exercises and require you to shuffle or run from one point to another. It's a fun way to target all your major muscle groups at once. Your clothes will feel less snug and your friends will comment on how svelte you look!

WHERE TO BOOT CAMP?

Most membership-based gyms offer early morning boot camp-style classes or month-long boot camp challenges. Meetup is a great resource for finding weekend boot camps in nearby parks or community centers. My personal favorite is LACEY STONE'S BOOTYCAMP, offered in NYC and LA as a semi-private 4-week long program. Bootycamp is focused on improving your overall fitness with a special emphasis on the booty. The booty is not to be undervalued. It's one of the first things people check out on the single's scene and definitely one of the last when you walk away. Celebrity trainer/fitness personality, Lacey Stone, created Bootycamp to fight saggy booty syndrome so that men and women can feel confident about their rump shaker. There's no excuse for covering it up when you can do something about it.

Bootycamp takes place outdoors in the Spring, Summer and Fall months twice a week at 6.30am. NYC sessions are held on Perry Street Pier in Hudson River Park with amazing views of the river and invigorating fresh air. You couldn't ask for a better outdoor setting which franky, beats the gym. Athletic drills combine cardio and strength training using your own body resistance, and I'm not going to lie--they're challenging. Lacey is personally invested in Bootycamp even though tv appearances and fitness reality shows have her crisscrossing the country. Her hand picked coaches are 5-star and if you have specific questions or would like to register, email her directly at lacey@laceystonefitness.com. The cost of Bootycamp may vary depending on the program but expect to pay somewhere between $300-350.
